rem.rem

July 8, 2015

IDM, logreybeam, Type, electronica, electronic musicA double release of logreybeam’s It’s All Just Another Aspect Of Mannerism (2004), rem.rem includes a re-mastered (by Shawn @ AudibleOddities) version of the original, and remixes of each track by different artists. …Aspect of Mannerism is an arrangement of sounds and textures – beautiful, industrial, abrasive and calm.  The space between the sound is as equally important as the noise, creating a seemingly tactile environment.

Logreybeam said of making …Aspect of Mannerism [2004]: It started with sound design, most of the sounds are acoustic samples that were mangled & manipulated beyond recognition… Usually the sounds let themselves go and I just went where they took me.  A lot of times the composition came out of restraining the natural tendencies of the sounds.

He used: A lot of different mics, nothing really amazing.  I knew that since I would be treating things so heavily, a pristine recording wasn’t my primary concern.  In fact, artifacts that occurred in the actual recording sometimes lent to the processing that I was doing, giving me unique and exciting elements to play with. Also, everything went though Max/MSP at some stage.

Remix artists include Proem, Ilkae and Proswell, who have produced for Merck, Monotonik and n5MD.

rem.rem is available by donation at Bandcamp.

Perhaps…

July 6, 2015

logreybeam, soundtrack, instrumentalPerhaps… is a collection of encounters and conversations portrayed through sound. Compositions [written, played and recorded by Morley] include piano, accordion, clarinets, melodica, cello, and software, amongst other instruments and vocals. Late nights were spent laying down sketches of melodies and tones, and he would return to the studio in the morning to edit and arrange. Unlike logreybeam’s previous albums where his process is to electronically mangle instruments beyond recognition, with Perhaps… he features the instrument and applies very few electronic effects.

Orchestration: piano, accordion, Bb clarinet, alto clarinet, melodica, tenor saxophone, glockenspiel, cello, voice, acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar, clavinet and software.

All songs written, performed, and recorded by gabriel morley except ‘my own home’, written by Robert and Richard Sherman. additional vocals on ‘melody pines’ by Janice Marder. vocals on ‘this torment and this thought’ by Julien Neto.

Perhaps… is available on iTunes and Amazon.

False Start [remixed]

February 10, 2015

IDM, electronica, Stavostrand, Exercise One, logreybeam, remixWhile the original EP is a return to logreybeam’s electronica roots [e.g. Yasume, remixes for Metamatics and Norken], ‘False Start [remixed]’ departs in various directions — from ambient/ downtempo and IDM, to tech house and techno.

After opening with Ruxpin’s ethereal, glitchy rendition of Atumnal Tints, the album then makes a respectively deeper, then darker and dirtier turn through Missingsense and Roel Funcken. Exercise One opens a techno stretch with deliciously slow, sludgy beats, Mikael Stavöstrand delivers a rolling bassline + tech-house groove, and Roy E Gamble [another Gabriel Morley alias] offers a preview of what happens when the artist remixes himself. The album winds down with a comparative study on the deconstruction of ‘Reminder’ from  Shiro Fujioka and Tom Roberts — the latter leaving us with a scape of loveliness, à la classic Global Communication.

False Start [remixed] is available on Bandcamp. Proceeds benefit Macmillan Cancer Support.

False Start

November 27, 2014

IDM, electronica, logreybeamFalse Start pays homage to logreybeam’s electronica roots, and utilizes his growing analog synth arsenal. “Reminder” is wholly sequenced with SH101’s on-board sequencer — a ‘quirky beast’ that gave it an odd time signature and drifting tempo. “Scales of Vociferation” was mainly written by a scale-based, random sequencer patch that triggered various synthesizers.

Many of the beats and melodies on False Start are controlled and sequenced by MAX/Msp patches triggering hardware, then subject to logreybeam’s fine instinct for arrangement. Heavily used on the EP are: Korg MS20 [vintage], Roland SH101, Ekdhal Moisturizer and Sherman Filterbank.

Half of the tracks on False Start are collaborations — “Marinetti vs. The Golem” with lure, Vibrane on “Technological Forgery” and “Autumnal Tints” with Latrondex and his stash of vintage drum machines.

False Start is available on Boomkat and iTunes.
